Many muslim girls in Norway are not allowed to ride bicycles by their
parents. One of the reasons is said to be sexual prejudices and fear that
the girls may break their maidenheads.
Labour politician Saera Kahn in Oslo claims girls from Arabic countries are
being told that they can break their maidenheads when riding a bike.
According to Kahn the disallowance of bicycling has nothing to do with
Islam, but is to do with ignorance:
"It is no secret that many Arabic and Turkish girls are being told by their
parents to stay off bicycle seats. They are told they can lose their
virginity", Kahn told VG.
Danish local council Skive is arranging bicycle courses for 18 Muslim girls
at the moment, as the girls do not know how to ride bikes due to the
negative image of bicycling in their home countries. Being able to use a
bike is necessary for women who want to work in the health sector as
distances are long between patients' homes in the Danish community.
Leader of the Muslim Women's Network in Oslo, Atiya Islam, is encouraging
the Muslim women to dress appropriately, not to jump up and down on the seat
and to ride slowly. Islam told VG that if bicycling resulted in sexual
stimulation of women, she would not recommend it.
Fakhra Salimi at the resource centre for immigrants said the discussion is
hopeless:
"Sexualising the bike is just wild imagination and has nothing to do with
religion".
Doctor Rubab Shah from Bærum encourages women to cycle more, both in a
health perspective and an environmental perspective, telling VG that there
is no risk of breaking the maidenhead when cycling.
